Our new Product backlog wall

We’ve recently installed a new product backlog wall. Those of you who’ve seen the old backlog wall know I’m a big fan of visualizing.

The old wall only visualized the product backlog, but we had separate whiteboards for our sprint backlog and our maintenance (kanban board). Because our team had to move to a different location, we saw the opportunity to integrate all the whiteboards into one big product wall. So what changes have we made and what benefits do we expect:

  • We now have all product development aspects visualized in one big flow from the product vision on the far left to product maintenance on the right and the company loves it because they just have to take a look at the wall to see what’s going on.
  • I noticed that the detailed user stories are not the level of detail our management is interested in, so I decided to keep the epics we’re working on at the left side of the board and draw small progress bars on them. Now our management always knows what features we’re working on without having to understand each detail user story.
  • We’ve integrated both development and maintenance on one wall.

I’m very enthusiastic about this improved product wall, but more important: the team and the rest of the company are enthusiastic.
